Being Victorian
by Ian Swankie
Monday 13th March
We all know many things about the Victorians, but this talk delves beneath the surface as we use art to look at Queen Victoria, her life, her grief as a widow, her values and her influence on society during her long reign.
We’ll see the impact of her moral attitude and her tastes as the world changed dramatically through the industrial revolution. Trade, empire, church, science, arts, health and wealth all made significant shifts during the 1800s. We will try to imagine what it was like being a nineteenth century citizen, rich or poor, male or female, young or old.
