Thirty Years Working for BBC News

Nick Salmond

12 October 2026

In 1988, Nick joined the BBC as a trainee Studio Manager in Radio. What followed was a 33-year career in BBC News, in both Radio and Television, working on some of the most important stories of the century. In this talk, Nick discusses his career in the BBC and explains what it is like to present the public with some of the great moments in modern history, such as 9/11 and the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. He'll show us how the BBC Newsroom works and how stories get on air, and why things sometimes go wrong.
