Gardens in Art
The depiction of the garden in painting
from the Romans to Monet
by Clare Ford-Wille

Gardens have been painted by artists from all periods and countries. Why did they paint them and what can we learn of the development of landscape gardening from their paintings? They are also a fascinating record of history and customs from the wall paintings in Roman villas, medieval manuscripts and renaissance frescoes to the colour drenched canvases of Monet.
